Traffic Enforcement Targeting Speed
The Government Traffic Safety Committee's (GTSC) Police Traffic Services (PTS) grantees are funded to conduct dedicated traffic enforcement projects addressing speed. Using data to isolate locations where speed-involved crashes occur, law enforcement agencies deploy officers year-round in an effort to curb speeding and change behavior.
Speed Awareness Week Enforcement Mobilization
The GTSC requests that law enforcement statewide participate in a week-long enforcement operation dedicated to combating speeding on our roadways. The Speed Awareness Week Enforcement Mobilization coincides with the annual NASCAR race event in Watkins Glen and the New York State Police Speed Week. The public should expect to see an increased police presence and targeted speed enforcement patrols. Press releases are issued and a public service announcement airs on television during this period utilizing NHTSA’s Obey the Sign or Pay the Fine branding.
Public Education
The GTSC funds community traffic safety projects statewide which include education and outreach about the dangers of speeding. Some of these programs focus on young drivers in their high schools and require that they sign a pledge to drive safely as a condition of receiving a school parking permit. Partners, including the New York State Police, also distribute educational materials at community events, auto shows, and county fairs which highlight the risks of speeding and the potential penalties.
