Efforts to Improve Older Driver Safety

Introduction

The Governor’s Traffic Safety Committee (GTSC) wants to make driving as safe as possible for older drivers. To this end, we have developed an Older/Medically At-Risk Driver Safety Plan which contains elements such as:

Data/Research Gathering

  • To identify focus areas/communities throughout New York to deliver programs.

Outreach & Education

  • Utilize established programs such as CarFit. CarFit is an educational program that was developed by The American Occupational Therapy Association (AOTA), The American Automobile Association (AAA), and American Association of Retired Persons (AARP). The program offers older adults the opportunity to check how well their personal vehicles "fit" them for maximum safety and comfort. You can learn about Carfit by visiting their website for more information.
  • Provide presentations to senior groups and retirement communities on the DMV Driver Re-Evaluation Process and proactive steps aging road users can take to continue to drive as long as possible and as safely as possible. For presentations/training requests, please contact Highway Safety Program Representative, Robert Lopez, at (518) 402-2092 or by email.
