As we age, our bodies change, and so do our needs behind the wheel. That is why CarFit, a free educational program developed by AAA, AARP, and the American Occupational Therapy Association, is so important.
CarFit helps older drivers make sure their vehicles fit them properly and safely. Trained technicians will check 12 key areas of the driver's fit, including:
- Seat position
- Mirror adjustment
- Pedal placement
- Steering wheel distance
- Head restraint height
- Seat belt fit
They will also provide information and resources on community-specific resources that can enhance our safety as drivers and increase our mobility in the community.
Why is CarFit important?
Older drivers are often the safest drivers on the road, but they are also more likely to be killed or seriously injured in a crash. This is because older adults are more fragile and more likely to have underlying medical conditions.
A proper fit in your car can help you stay safe behind the wheel by:
- Reducing your risk of injury in a crash
- Improving your visibility
- Making it easier to control your vehicle

CarFit is a great option for all older drivers, but it is especially important for drivers who:
- have recently had surgery or a medical condition that has affected their mobility
- have changed vehicles
- have not had their vehicle adjusted in a while
Don't wait. Get a CarFit checkup today and make sure your vehicle fits you properly and safely.
